Como hacer un buen writing

Seguramente la mayoría pensaréis que es más fácil COMUNICAR una idea hablando que escribiendo.  De hecho, ¿no os habéis quedado alguna vez paralizados delante del papel sin saber por dónde empezar a escribir?

Supongamos que tenemos que contar oralmente una misma historia a distintas personas una y otra vez: finalmente conseguiríamos explicar dicha historia mejor, de una forma más concisa y mejor organizada de lo que lo hacíamos las primeras veces. Esto es simplemente porque a medida que repetíamos la historia hemos ido organizando y perfeccionando las ideas, hasta conseguir adaptarlas para lograr nuestra intención de comunicación. Sin embargo, cuando hablamos con un grupo de personas  no solemos tener dicha  oportunidad de repetir lo mismo una y otra vez hasta conseguir lo deseado.

Al igual que cuando hablamos, cuando escribimos también estamos comunicando ideas. Pero esta vez con la ventaja de haberlo podido repetir tantas veces como deseemos. Así que ¿por qué no empezar escribiendo todo lo que se nos pasa por nuestra mente? Después solo habrá que repetirlo organizando todas las ideas, dejando lo realmente importante y desechando aquello que no nos sirva o no comunique. Desde English Connection te damos una serie de sencillos pasos para que le pierdas el miedo al papel en blanco.

Normalmente se nos pide escribir sobre algo concreto, lo cual ya nos allana bastante el camino porque con esto ya estamos estableciendo el propósito que tiene nuestro escrito.

•  Una vez el objetivo en mente,  antes de empezar a escribir tendremos queplantearnos todas aquellas preguntas con cuya respuesta estaríamos cubriendo lo que nos pide el escrito.

• Con esto en mente empezaremos a apuntar todo lo que se nos ocurra (brainstorming) para dar respuesta a dichas preguntas siempre teniendo en cuenta lo que queremos hacer llegar al lector.

• Una vez hecho esto volveremos a repetir el escrito dejando las ideas relevantes y desecharemos aquellas que dan demasiados rodeos.

• Entonces es la hora de perfeccionar estas ideas para que llame la atención de nuestro lector desde el minuto uno. Para ello utilizaremos FRASES CLAVE en las que irán encapsuladas nuestras ideas y que serán LA FRASE PRINCIPAL y LAS FRASES SECUNDARIAS.

- La frase PRINCIPAL la ubicaremos siempre en nuestro primer párrafo y será la que establezca el propósito del escrito, es decir, la que sintetice las ideas que usarás para respaldar lo que quieres contar. Por lo tanto tiene que ser una frase específica que deje claros los puntos que se van a tratar en el resto del escrito.

- Las frases SECUNDARIAS las iremos utilizando en el resto de los párrafos. Normalmente usaremos una idea secundaria por cada párrafo y la desarrollaremos. No olvides que si la frase PRINCIPAL respalda lo que contaremos en el resto del writing, la frase SECUNDARIA  respaldará lo que contaremos en el resto del párrafo en el que esté ubicada.

Cuando ya tengamos todas nuestras ideas plasmadas tendremos que leer el writing entero intentando de una forma objetiva saber si estamos respondiendo a todos los puntos requeridos además de expandirlos apropiadamente. ¡Y recuerda no dar demasiados rodeos!

Os dejo un pequeño resumen del mismo.

It has been nine months since Joan Jacobs’s beloved 17-year-old daughter, Sophie, took her own life by driving onto the railroad tracks in front of an oncoming train. At home in Maryland, Joan, a novelist, feels “Sophie’s absence has slowly woven itself into the fabric of reality.” Desperate for normalcy, she returns to a former sanctuary, the family’s summer house on Cape Ann, with the remains of her wounded clan: her husband, Anders, and their two younger girls, Eve and Eloise. But, somewhat oddly, Joan hasn’t realized that this historically happy place will issue fresh reminders of their loss. Once there, she is again forced to struggle with the mystery of why her daughter killed herself.

Like most parents in her awful predicament, Joan finds ways to blame herself. Although she knew Sophie had been depressed, Joan was “neck deep in the final edits of her last book when Sophie died, and up at night thinking about her characters and their problems rather than her own living children.” Was that truly the tipping point? Is she afraid to dig deeper? Or is the answer to this hideous question unknowable in its truest sense?

But there’s another mystery at the heart of “The Why of Things,” Elizabeth Hartley Winthrop’s keenly observed third novel, and it too tears away at the family’s fragile recovery. Almost instantly upon their arrival at Cape Ann, while Joan and Anders are unpacking the car, 15-year-old Eve finds newly made tire tracks that lead to the old quarry on their property — now a treasured swimming hole — and deduces that a vehicle of some sort has recently sunk below the water. When a beer can, a flip-flop, a plastic bag and strings of bubbles rise, surrounded by a telltale gasoline spill, Eve presses her parents, who are strangely skeptical at first, to call the authorities. Joan may be the novelist, but Eve is the one full of burning questions about the young man, James Favazza, whose body the police divers raise, inquisitiveness giving way to a dangerous obsession as Eve becomes convinced that his passing was no more accidental than her sister’s.

These two narrative motors — the tragic deaths of two unrelated young people, parallel stories with the potential to intertwine — should provide enough drama to fuel this novel, with its themes of loss, grief, guilt and resilience. And for a while we hope, along with Eve, for answers — even when she begins to sound a little like a breathless Encyclopedia Brown: “According to the paper, he was last seen at his mother’s house at 11 in the morning. Was he drunk then? I doubt it. . . . Which means . . . he had to go somewhere to drink after he left his mother’s house. Someone must have seen him. But they’re not speaking up. A little weird, huh?”

Chances for convergence abound as Winthrop effortlessly narrates from different points of view. Eloise, Eve’s younger sister, grows attached to a stray dog that once belonged to James. Joan has multiple encounters with James’s mother. Eve spends time with Sophie’s former boyfriend. And yet at almost every juncture, when there is the possibility of emotional risk yielding to revelation, the characters pull back — out of fear, perhaps, or politesse, or just Yankee stoicism. They tiptoe around one another. There is reticence even among intimates. When Anders finds the program to James’s funeral among Joan’s things, he moves it slightly so “she will know that he has found it.” When he finally asks about it, 27 pages later, she confesses to picking it up at the church before the service, which she did not attend. Now the reader grows frustrated. Joan is a novelist — isn’t it her job to be curious?

Oddly, the book’s most mundane moments are what Winthrop renders so startlingly well, as if the devil were purely in the details — a breakfast in a diner between Anders and Eve as they rate the packaged jellies in a moment of increasing tenderness, or Eve’s stop at a convenience store where the particulars of what she sees are so well wrought that the reader stands at her side, or the richly drawn somnambulistic pleasures of Anders’s scuba diving forays. Perhaps there’s a form of bravery in those ordinary details. Often, after a tragedy, we wonder how people find the will to put one foot ahead of the other, to somehow move forward. In many ways, Winthrop has written a novel about continuance. And while it’s tempting at times to find her characters too numb, too passive, too well behaved under nightmarish circumstances — even when alone with themselves — her message, as complex as it is simple, is that the unendurable can and will be endured only if one chooses to go on.
